- Submitting an Ontology: Users can submit ontologies once they have registered and logged in.
- Editing Ontology Metadata: Users can edit metadata only for ontologies they have submitted. To do so, locate your ontology, then click the ontology title and an 'Edit Ontology Metadata' button should appear.
- Submitting a New Version: Existing ontologies can be updated to a new version by the person who originally submitted them. You'll need to locate your ontology, then click on the ontology title, and click 'Submit New Version'.
- More Help: You can find more help on the MMI website, the MMI Semantic Web Google Code site, or by emailing us.
Welcome
Welcome to the Marine Metadata Interoperability project's Ontology Registry and Repository. The Ontology Registry and Repository is a Web-based application for accessing and sharing ontologies.
Features of the Ontology Registry and Repository include:
- Full ontology navigation using Flash visualization
- Web-service access to Ontology Registry and Repository content and capabilities, which enables developers to use our services in their tools.
- Ability to add Community Notes to classes in MMI ontologies, a feature that enables the community to comment on ontologies and to discuss their contents
- Ability to create Point to Point Mappings between concepts in different MMI ontologies
- Bulk export of ontology-to-ontology mappings in RDF format
- Navigation of multiple ontologies, which enables users to have several ontologies opened simultaneously in different tabs in the user interface
- URIs for all ontology content, which enable developers to access and share MMI content from their applications
- Improved support through Protégé for ontologies in OWL format
Getting Started
The Ontology Registry and Repository allows users to browse, upload, download, search, comment on, and create mappings for ontologies.
Browse the Library
Users can browse and explore individual ontologies by navigating either a tree structure or an animated graphical view. Users can also view mappings and ontology metadata, and download ontologies.
Additionally, users who are signed in may also submit a new ontology to the library. All submissions to the library are reviewed.
Search the Library
Users may search ontology content across all ontologies, within certain ontologies or in a specific ontology in the library. As well as searching by class name or id, attributes such as synonyms can be queried. Users can search ontology content and metadata, which contains project information about an ontology.
Convert a Vocabulary to RDF
MMI provides a tool called voc2rdf, which allows users to take vocabularies in a delimited format and convert them to RDF, then easily submit them to the registry. Voc2RDF transforms a vocabulary in text format into a format that greatly facilitates the exploitation of your vocabulary by Semantic Web tools, thus enabling semantic interoperability. This format is called the Resource Description Framework.
Map Ontologies to One Another
The Vocabulary Integration Environment, also known as VINE, is a stand-alone piece of software that you can download and use on your local computer. It allows users to perform fast mappings of terms across ontologies. VINE allows users to work with ontologies and search using regular expression, perform a minimum number of clicks to create a new mapping, store mappings as external files, and work with ontologies in the MMI Registry and Repository.
